Mains to Mains ATS panels are used where the primary mains supply is backed up by a secondary mains supply feed into the building. This type of panel is offer used for critical loads, such as emergency fire fighting lifts. The ATS panel monitors the local primary mains supply and will transfer the load to the secondary mains supply if it should fail.
You can have emergency power in two forms—a second mains and a backup generator. When the primary power source (utility) fails, the ATS panel automatically switches to either emergency power sources mentioned above with one or more load circuits. This way, there isn’t any interruption of electricity.
But, here’s the catch—utility power can revive anytime, thereby causing an overload. This is a dangerous situation as electrical wiring and appliances can fry under increased power surge. To nullify this risk, ATS switches the power source from secondary to utility; and also gives ample cooling time to the generator.
